Light.
The beginning of it all.
During several months in a studio that overlooked a sheep meadow, Henry Moore produced a full sketchbook full of sheep in 1980. I remember finding inspiration in all his sheep drawings. I began to understand the nature of the artist and the way of life that was artmaking. How do different mediums change what I want to express? How do different techniques affect the way I want the viewer to feel? Thinking in words is different than thinking in shapes. What catches my eye? Henry Moore helped jumpstart my visual literacy. I learned how art could also serve in problem-solving and decision-making. The first thing I noticed about the things I noticed was: light. So I tried to study light the way Moore studied sheep. First, with camera. Second, with charcoal.
